The word Agora means “marketplace” in Greek — a space where people would come together to trade materials, share knowledge, and meet real needs. That’s the philosophy that has shaped Agora Timbers since we started in 1990: creating a place where quality timber and reliable supply meet the practical demands of Australian builders, manufacturers, and craftsmen.
The business was founded by Theo and Maree Catsoulis, after Theo — while working in the steel industry in Papua New Guinea — came across the hardwood species Kwila. The strength, workability, and finish of the timber made a lasting impression. That introduction became the starting point of what is now over 30 years of experience sourcing specialty exotic and tropical hardwoods.
Built on Experience, Not Theory
Theo is still hands-on when it comes to grading and quality control. He regularly visits mills, communities, and supply yards throughout Southeast Asia and the Pacific to make sure every pack that lands in our yard meets the standard. Having long-term supplier relationships — some stretching back decades — gives us access to consistent quality, and species that are often hard to find elsewhere in Australia.
We don’t just import timber. We source it specifically to meet the needs of our clients. We speak directly with builders, joiners, and fabricators to understand what’s required — whether that’s dimensional stability, clarity of grain, durability class, or colour tone — and then work backward to find the right product.
What We Offer
Agora Timbers has become a specialist wholesaler of rough-sawn, air-dried, and kiln-dried exotic hardwoods. Our yard carries a wide range of sizes and species, allowing us to supply timber suited to everything from high-end architectural joinery to structural batten screening.
We stock species with a proven performance record in Australian conditions and offer a variety of grain and colour options to suit different end uses — whether you’re after durability, finish, or appearance-grade product.
Our Focus: Practical, Ethical, Long-Term Supply
Our goal is to build reliable supply chains that deliver consistent timber quality — not just for today, but long-term. We select and supply with purpose: timber that holds up to its use, that machines well, and that meets our customers’ expectations from the first cut to final install.
Whether you’re after a container of select-grade hardwood or a custom mix for a specific project spec, we take pride in delivering what’s promised — with no shortcuts.
