Not every project has to be large-scale to leave a lasting impression. This recent custom piece shows how a simple idea — paired with the right timber — can transform an overlooked space into something functional and visually striking.
A client approached us with an underused section of their outdoor deck. They’d installed a gabion cage — a raised, rock-filled feature — but it felt too rough and didn’t quite suit the rest of the outdoor space. What they needed was something to soften the look and make the area more usable without losing that natural, textural charm.
Our solution? A single, character-filled Slab of Japanese Sugi Cedar, durability class 2 above ground. Selected for its warm tone, clean grain, and lightness — ideal for outdoor furniture. With its natural live edge left intact, the slab created a striking contrast to the rugged stone base while tying in beautifully with the surrounding landscape.

A Personal Favourite
This project was championed by Dave, Theo’s son and a long-time member of the Agora Timbers team. Dave has worked across hundreds of projects in his 15+ years at Agora, but this one stood out.
“It was a unique custom job that really showcased the natural beauty and versatility of Sugi Cedar,” Dave said. “Sometimes it’s the smaller, more thoughtful projects that really highlight what good timber can do.”
The result is a seamless, one-of-a-kind outdoor bench that balances clean design with organic texture — all while making practical use of a previously unused corner of the deck.
