In 2007, Agora Timbers was invited by Greenpeace Oceania to participate in a pioneering eco-forestry initiative in the Solomon Islands. The aim: to explore and support sustainable timber harvesting practices rooted in community leadership and environmental responsibility.
The project was centered around Vete Village Eco Timber Enterprises (VETE) — a community-run forestry venture supported by Greenpeace and its sponsors. VETE was designed to empower local landowners to manage and benefit from their natural resources, using sustainable logging practices that preserved ecological and cultural heritage.
Supporting Village-Led Sustainable Forestry
As part of a small group of committed buyers, Theo Catsoulis, Director and Founder of Agora Timbers, joined the project to work directly with VETE and local communities. Agora Timbers agreed to purchase hardwoods harvested through this eco-forestry model — with Greenpeace and VETE facilitating the collection and export of timber on behalf of multiple village groups.

This initiative went far beyond timber trade. It involved a comprehensive forestry management process that included:
- Identifying customary land ownership
- Mapping clan boundaries to avoid disputes
- Protecting sacred sites, burial grounds, and subsistence farming areas
- Establishing low-impact harvest zones
- Implementing a 35-year rotational harvest cycle
The result was a framework that respected both the environment and traditional land custodianship — a rarity in an industry often dominated by large-scale commercial operators.
A Lasting Impact, Despite Limited Supply
While the VETE project ultimately produced only a modest volume of exportable timber, its legacy is significant. For Theo and the Agora Timbers team, the experience reinforced a core belief: tropical hardwood sourcing should be ethical, community-led, and environmentally conscious.
As Theo reflects, “It was an eye-opening and meaningful experience. It confirmed that there are ways to do things differently — ways that respect people, forests, and future generations.”
Our Ongoing Commitment
Today, Agora Timbers continues to work closely with suppliers and communities across the Pacific and Southeast Asia to ensure our exotic and tropical hardwoods are sourced responsibly. We remain committed to supporting sustainable livelihoods, protecting native forests, and building long-term partnerships rooted in trust and shared values. By participating in projects like Greenpeace’s eco-forestry initiative, we reaffirm our role not just as timber importers, but as stewards of the landscapes and communities that make this industry possible.
